I think this has been one of the best lessons yet. I want to link this blog with all the wonderful tools I learned from this lesson.
Kelly Hines. The session I chose to watch was called Little Kids, Big Possibilities from The k12online Conference site
I learned about wallwisher.com. I think this is going to be an extremely useful website to use with young learners. It’s safe and very user friendly. Students don’t have to register. It’s intuitive and easy to use. You can sort, classify and make generalizations with ease. It a great way to assess knowledge and start discussions or projects.
I also learned about wordle.net . You use this site to make “word clouds” with important info from text or about a subject. Wordle would be a great way to start an “all about me” book or poster for kids at the beginning of the year.
I’m going to show my son the comics.com site soon. I think it will keep him writing over the summer. I like Kelly Hines’ suggestion to use the comics as an assessment tool. Her example was to ask the children to write different kinds of sentences using the comics provided to see if they understood the differences.
The last kid friendly site she suggested was a safe social networking site called edmodo.com. One can post group questions or poll students or get students to create polls.
Oh I also learned about CIPA the Children’s Internet Protection Act. I’ll have to learn more about that legislation.
I will truly be referring back to this entry come fall when we’re planning our school year.
